Switzerland's most beautiful baroque city with Mediterranean flair
Solothurn is considered the most beautiful baroque town in Switzerland. Characterised by the architecture from the time of the ambassadors of the French royal family (1530-1792), it is often referred to as the ‘Ambassadors’ Town’.
Jesuit Church
The Jesuit Church is considered one of the best baroque buildings in Switzerland. The Jesuit Church was built from 1680-1689 according to the principles of the Voralberg master builders as a Baroque unified space.
The Cathedral of St Ursus
St. Ursen Cathedral is considered the most important Swiss building of early classicism and was built in light-coloured ‘Solothurn marble’.
The clock tower
The oldest building in the town was built at the beginning of the 13th century. The bell-ringer in the helmet lantern strikes the bell with a large hammer.
11 i o'clock, now it strikes 11.
The original Solothurn clock, around 3 metres high, not only indicates Solothurn time with its 11-hour dial, but also plays the Solothurn song on 11 bells at 11, 12, 17 and 18 o'clock.
There is also plenty to discover in the area around Solothurn.
Our surroundings also have a lot to offer. Did you know, for example, that the Weissenstein is waiting for you in the immediate vicinity?
Verena Gorge and the hermitage
Just outside the city of Solothurn lies the idyllic Verena Gorge, a mystical place of power. A hermit still lives here today. The leisurely walk from the city centre to the entrance of the Verena Gorge takes around 20 minutes.
Solothurn's local mountain - Weissenstein
not only families but also hiking fans. Walking up the mountain or taking the Weissenstein cable car - both have their appeal.
